Details
Mt. Daisen is perhaps Oda’s most dramatic woodblock print. The scene is sharply divided by intricately carved and printed storm clouds as they move into the design, dominating the composition. The clouds stand in sharp contrast to the more simplified forms of the landscape below. The bright and vivid palate in the lower portion of the composition illuminates the scene. It serves as a backdrop to the violent and turbulent action the gathering storm clouds provide.
Connoisseur's Note
The printing effects present on this impression are incredible. The drama and power of the swirling clouds are composed of multiple printings of gray, blue, and purple. The barren work in the clouds is an effective printing technique that conveys their menacing turbulence and foreshadows the violence of the torrential rainfall that is soon to follow. This print is a second edition impression of a pre-war design.
