Details

Kazuma Oda stands out as one of the rare artists who seamlessly navigated two distinct artistic movements and mediums. Renowned as Japan's foremost lithographer of the 20th century in the Sosaku Hanga tradition, Oda also crafted remarkable woodblock prints that have attained iconic status in. In this remarkable Sosaku Hanga piece, Oda returns to a theme he previously explored in Shin Hanga for the publisher Watanabe: a snow-covered landscape with figures braving the elements. Notably, in this composition, the design reflects the contemporary style of the era in which the print was created, evident in the 1920s attire adorning the figures and the Western-style architecture dotting the landscape. Oda's confident and expressive carving imbues the work with a distinct expressionistic quality. Despite its simplicity, the strategic use of two colors enhances the depth and visual allure of this captivating composition.
