Details
This striking and expressive composition features Mt. Yatsugatake, a group of eight inactive volcanic peaks listed among the 100 famous mountains in Japan. Besides Mt. Fuji, Yatsugatake is one of the highest and most accessible mountains from Tokyo, with the trailhead reachable in less than three hours from Shinjuku.
Rendered in the style of Western etchings and lithographs, Oda’s composition is dynamic, highlighting the treacherous terrain of the mountain and the rapidly moving clouds overhead. The active lines that build up the composition are charged with nervous energy, sustained throughout the entire surface. The design is remarkable in its draftsmanship and execution, exhibiting a surprising photorealism rarely seen in Japanese prints.
Connoisseur's Note
The line work and printing of this etching are exceptional, showcasing why Oda is regarded as Japan’s premier etcher and lithographer. Oda achieved effects in etching and lithography traditionally only seen in woodblock printing, pushing the boundaries of all print mediums.
This exceptional impression is in a fine state of preservation. The striking design, along with the atypical subject and medium for the artist and the small edition size, make this Oda a highly desirable work.
