Details

This striking and expressive composition features Mt. Jodo and Mt. Tate in the Hida mountain range in Toyama. These two mountains are in very close proximity and are typically depicted together as Oda presents them. However, Toyama prefecture is infamous for its heavy snowfall, and the mountain range is often shown with blankets of snow cover. Oda elects to showcase the mountains in late spring when most of the snow has receded and when the active green of new foliage is visible. Oda’s composition is dynamic, highlighting the quickly moving clouds overhead as well as the fog that hovers. The surface of the mountains is also rendered with a similar vitality. The active lines that build up the mountains are charged with nervous energy. Moreover, the mountain’s colors are not contained within these frenzied boundaries and scatter across the composition with an inspired whimsical pattern.

Connoisseur's Note

The line work and printing of this lithograph is exceptional. This work is a prime example of why Oda was regarded as Japan’s premier lithographer. Oda was able to produce effects in lithography that were traditionally only seen in woodblock printing and thus push the boundaries of both mediums.

This impression is in a fine state of preservation with exceedingly sharp and vivid colors and in overall excellent condition. The striking design in an atypical subject and small edition size make this Oda a highly desirable work. This print comes with its original folder as issued by the artist.
