From Block to Brush
A selection of paintings by Japanese artists.
This collection features a captivating array of oil paintings and drawings by Japanese artists, many of whom are known for their print work, showcasing a dynamic fusion of Western and Eastern artistic traditions. The diverse subjects and mediums highlight the evolution of Japanese art in the early 20th century, when Western artistic principles were introduced and further developed through Yōga (Western-style painting). This movement sought to blend traditional Japanese aesthetics with European techniques such as realism, perspective, and the depiction of light and shadow. These artists adapted Western conventions while remaining rooted in their cultural heritage, pushing artistic boundaries and exploring new realms of expression. Each piece in our exhibition offers a unique perspective on how these artists navigated the intersection of cultural influences to create something entirely original.
