Details

As night settles in and moonlight emerges, the gathering snow from the day’s passing storm reflects a subtle cold blue light. A warm orange glow of interior lights welcomes a lone figure home. This stunning night scene owes much of its success to the masterful printing effects of Watanabe’s skilled craftsmen. The baren sujizuri (swirls) and bokashi (color gradation) found throughout the design, particularly seen in the snow and sky overhead give this impression a wonderful sense of texture and depth and a strong poetic sensibility.

Connoisseur's Note

This rarely seen post-war print was published by Watanabe and is the first state of the design. The print bears the appropriate 6mm round publisher's mark at the lower right corner of the composition. This impression is an excellent example of the design. The subtle blue pigmentation present throughout the snow is absent from later printings. The colors of this impression are sharp and vivid, appearing as strong as the day it was printed.
