Details
Snow at Hatori is considered Hasui’s undisputed post-war masterpiece and is among his best designs. In this work, the accumulating snow advances throughout the design, finding and filling every space within the composition. The scene reads quite realistic as the snowfall slightly disrupts the visual plane, providing an impressionist quality as one would experience the scene if encountered in person. The sense of light is masterful as it modulates between the glow of moonlight reflected through the snow and the shadows cast by the varying thickness of passing storm clouds overhead.
