Details
"Setting Sun, Ichinokura Ikegami" by Hasui captures the breathtaking beauty of a tranquil countryside scene at dusk. The focal point of the composition is a large red sun, dipping below the horizon and casting a warm, golden glow across the landscape. Partially obscured by rising fog, the sun creates a mesmerizing spectacle as it sets between the trees, illuminating the sky with vibrant hues of yellow and orange. Above, a dark blue sky deepens into twilight, contrasting with the fiery tones below. Amidst this ethereal scene, a lone figure traverses a field dotted with neatly arranged crops, adding a sense of scale and human presence to the serene surroundings. Framed by a canopy of trees, the composition exudes a sense of tranquility and harmony, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the beauty of nature at twilight.
Connoisseur's Note
The print bears the publisher’s “A-type” seal at the bottom right margin, indicating it is a first-state. As such, it showcases the highest level of craftsmanship from Watanabe's workshop. Notice the skillful bokashi through out the design, particularly evident in the blue, red and yellow of the sky and the surrounding background. The razor-sharp impression, combined with outstanding printing embellishments, exemplifies the pinnacle of print production in 20th-century Japan.
