Details
In "The Nikko Highway," Hasui skillfully captures the serene beauty of the renowned Nikko region, celebrated for its towering trees and lush forests. The print depicts a solitary figure, burdened by a sizable bundle of bamboo slung over their shoulder, trudging along the highway. The weight of the load causes a slight forward tilt in their gait, conveying a sense of effort and determination. The forest road stretches out ahead, flanked by dense foliage that envelops the traveler in a cocoon of greenery. At the clearing's edge, a vast expanse of blue sky peeks through, adorned with billowing white clouds, offering a glimpse of open space amidst the verdant surroundings.
Connoisseur's Note
The print bears the publisher’s “C-type” seal at the bottom right margin, indicating it is a first-state. As such, it showcases the highest level of craftsmanship from Watanabe's workshop. Notice the skillful bokashi throughout the design. The razor-sharp impression, combined with outstanding printing embellishments, exemplifies the pinnacle of print production in 20th-century Japan.
