Details

In Hasui's woodblock print titled "Mt. Fuji, Narusawa," the majestic peak of Mount Fuji commands the center of the composition, its towering form dominating the scene. Half of the print is filled with the imposing silhouette of the iconic mountain, its grandeur accentuated by billowing clouds that drift across its iconic form. Below, an autumnal landscape unfolds in hues of orange, red, and brown, setting a warm and inviting tone. Nestled amidst this picturesque scenery is a quaint farmhouse situated at the lower center. Adjacent to the farmhouse, a cluster of persimmons hangs neatly to dry, adding a touch of country charm. Below, a freshly plowed field awaits the arrival of the new season. A small child and her mother make their way toward the welcoming door, hinting at the warmth and comfort found within their rustic abode amidst the breathtaking natural beauty of Mount Fuji.

Connoisseur's Note

The print bears the publisher’s “D-type” seal at the bottom right margin, indicating it is a first-state. Consequently, it exemplifies the pinnacle of craftsmanship from Watanabe's workshop. Take note of the skillful bokashi throughout the design, notably in the blue hues of the water and the sky. With its razor-sharp impression and exceptional printing techniques, it represents the zenith of print production in 20th-century Japan.
