Details
In "Kikyo Gate," Hasui offers a serene portrayal of a scene from the imperial grounds, focusing on a tranquil corner of the sprawling complex. At the heart of the composition, a calm moat encircles the grounds, reflecting the verdant foliage within and the grandeur of the surrounding architecture. Standing prominently at the center-right is a sturdy stone wall, a testament to the enduring presence of the imperial structures. Emerging beyond the wall’s confines is a traditional imperial structure adorned with an ornate ceramic-tiled roof, which exudes elegance against the backdrop of the bright blue sky and billowing clouds. The idyllic setting invites viewers to contemplate the timeless beauty and tranquility of Japan's imperial heritage.
Connoisseur's Note
The print bears the publisher’s “A-type” seal at the bottom right margin, indicating it is a first-state. Consequently, it exemplifies the pinnacle of craftsmanship from Watanabe's workshop. Take note of the skillful bokashi throughout the design, notably in the blue hues of the water and the sky. With its razor-sharp impression and exceptional printing techniques, it represents the zenith of print production in 20th-century Japan.
