Details
Tsukuhae was an art and poetry magazine produced by Onchi Koshiro, Fujimori Shizuo, and Tanaka Kyokichi while they were art students at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1913. The magazine had seven issues and ended in 1915. During its short run, the magazine explored poetry and prints dealing with the subjects of love, sex, life, and death. The magazine is most known for introducing the first work of abstraction in printed form in Japan, "Bright Hours", executed by Onchi in 1915.
This catalogue from the watershed exhibition on Tsukuhae held at the Tokyo Station Gallery in 2014 is a must have for the Sosaku Hanga collector. This exhibition is entirely dedicated to the art magazine and illustrates all seven issues. The catalogue also illustrates self-printed designs not included in the commercial version of the magazines, as well as woodblock-printed posters and other ephemera. This book also contains numerous drawings and oil paintings done by all three artists during this period. Since its recent publication, this book has become the authoritative reference on the topic.
