Details
Roy G. Cole first visited Japan during the post-war U.S. occupation. While there, he took notice of a Sekino woodblock print hung in the window at Yoseido Gallery, in Tokyo. From that first encounter, he was hooked and soon thereafter began collecting in earnest following his own taste. As the Sotheby’s catalogue points out, "When Mr. Cole talks about the formation of his print collection, it is from the rare vantage point of a collector who has consistently had the confidence to decide what he likes for himself. Although he amassed many early and rare examples, it is clear that when choosing among different states of the same print, he always favored the version that appealed to him aesthetically, rather than being moved by financial considerations. The result is a collection that clearly reflects the extraordinary tastes of a man who is ahead of his time".
This single-owner sale is the first of its kind, featuring Sosaku Hanga by the most significant artists of the genre as well as showcasing some of the rarest and most important designs produced in the post-war era. Though this catalogue is nearly 30 years old and the prices realized are sorely out of date, the artists and designs found within this sale are instructive and provide both novice and seasoned collectors the opportunity to sharpen their eye towards quality and scarcity. This catalogue is an invaluable tool for collectors and curators alike.
