Details
The artist Kawanishi Hide is known the world over for striking compositions of Kobe in his signature style of bold primary colors. However, most are not aware of his other passion as a collector of Japanese art, particularly the work of Takehisa Yumeji and early Sosaku Hanga works. As a collector, Kawanishi amassed the largest and most significant collection of Takehisa's work, with an emphasis on his paintings. Kawanishi's collection is striking for its quality as well as quantity—clearly Kawanishi made good use of his close relationships with the artists he worked with and admired to put together such an astonishing collection.
This exhibition catalogue illustrates Kawanishi's entire personal collection which was recently donated to the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto. This transformative gift yielded a groundbreaking exhibition which this beautifully produced reference exalts. The high-quality images are accompanied by text in both Japanese and English. The reference also boasts English language translations of the essays that provide valuable context.
