Details
In addition to being one of the leading print artists of the 20th century, Ono Tadashige was also a scholar dedicated to the study and research of Japanese prints. Ono penned dozens of books on the subject and this reference happens to be one of his most celebrated efforts. Before Merritt wrote her book on the subject, this was the bible for scholars and collectors of the genre. Ono went to great lengths to select a variety of artists that made contributions to the field. Naturally the vast majority of the works represented are by Sosaku Hanga artists, as Ono was a leading member of that school of printmaking. Though the text is in Japanese, the images speak for themselves. Some illustrations are ones you’d imagine be included but the vast majority are rarely seen prints, many by artists most collectors (even some scholars) have never come across. If you’re a fan of 20th century prints, this reference is a must have!
