Details
Onchi Koshiro is known as one of the giants of 20th-century printmaking in the Sosaku Hanga tradition. Though he attended art school with a western-style emphasis on oil painting in his youth, the artist is not known to have produced many oil paintings in his career. This exhibition catalogue is the sole reference dedicated to Onchi's oil paintings. The vast majority of these works were not previously known and have been reproduced in this catalogue for the first time.
The catalogue lays out the paintings sequentially based on their date and illustrates various subjects the artist explored in this medium. Its pages showcase a couple of Onchi's woodblock prints and attempt to connect the visual language the young artist explored in his oils as themes that would reappear in his celebrated woodblock prints. This reference is a must for the Sosaku Hanga aficionado and fan of Onchi.
