Details

This catalog is for the recent exhibition on the Japanese composer and conductor, Kosaku Yamada (1886-1965). Yamada was one of the first composers and conductors in Japan to work in orchestral music. Before his tenure, Yamada traveled extensively in Europe and was influenced by both European and Japanese visual arts such as oil painting and woodblock prints as well as performative dance. Yamada was a great influence on many Japanese avant-garde artists, particularly a young Koshiro Onchi and Kiyoshi Hasegawa. Yamada went on to found the first Japanese Orchestra and compose several operas.

This ground-breaking exhibition is memorialized in a well-produced catalog, illustrating the variety of artwork Yamada was instrumental in inspiring. Of particular note are the various works by Koshiro Onchi and Takehisa Yumeiji, which include numerous designs used as musical score covers, illustrated here for the first time.
