This gallery exhibition catalog is one of the more useful references on the Sosaku Hanga artist, Saito Kiyoshi. The vast majority of Saito references only provide a cursory examination of the artist’s collagraphs, a rare printing technique that utilizes cardboard as printing blocks that results in thick applications of pigment in very small editions. Saito first discovered this printing technique in California on his first visit to the U.S. and used it as the primary means of illustrating his trip to Paris in the 1960s. Saito produced dozens of collagraphs and this catalogue illustrates 53 of these rarely seen works, many reproduced in print for the first time. This catalog also illustrates dozens of Saito’s rarely seen pencil sketches and his mid-career print work.
