Hiratsuka Un'ichi is a towering figure in modern Japanese prints. Dozens of print artists called him teacher and he promoted Sosaku Hanga for more than 80 working years as an artist. This exhibition catalogue, produced by The Art Institute of Chicago, is a fitting tribute to Hiratsuka. The catalogue contains a fantastic essay by the late Helen Merritt, the leading scholar of modern Japanese prints at the time, and another by Hiratsuka's daughter and print artist, Keiko Moore. The book is bolstered further by one hundred illustrations of Hiratsuka's work taken from throughout his career. The artist’s top designs are included in this book, and so are rarely seen prints done in small editions or even in single impressions. This is by far the best English-language publication on the artist to date.
