Details
It's interesting how the winds of influence carry. It's quite well known how Japan and Ukiyo-e influenced Western artists such as Gauguin, Manet, Monet, and van Gogh. However, that is only part of the story. Those winds of influence returned home and shaped another generation of Japanese artists. This exhibition catalogue traces the influence first experienced by Europeans at the sight of Ukiyo-e and follows how that Western art (influenced by the east) arrived in Japan only to influence modern Japanese hanga artists and print artists from around the globe. This reference showcases Ukiyo-e, 19th and 20th century European print and painting artists, 20th century Japanese print artists such as Yamamoto Kanae, Onchi Koshiro, Hiratsuka Un’ichi, Komai Tetsuro, Saito Kiyoshi, Yamaguchi Gen, and contemporary artists such as Sam Francis, Keith Haring, Noda Tetsuya, and others.
