Details
Azechi Umetaro is known as the artist of mountains and the men who climb them. An avid mountaineer, Azechi dedicated the majority of his career to depicting Japan’s diverse mountain views and creating portraits of his companions who scaled those inspiring heights. However, Azechi’s early work was more diverse in its subjects. Temples, the changing rural landscape, and cityscapes all fascinated the young Azechi.
This catalogue presents us with the rare opportunity to closely consider Azechi's most early works. It concludes with Azechi's signature designs and serves as a striking comparison with the impressions of his youth.
