Details

Hamada Chimei served in the Japanese military and saw action in China in 1939. There, he saw firsthand the horrors of the battlefield, the mindless hierarchy of the military, the irrationality of wartime decision-making, the humiliation of powerlessness and inability to think freely. Despondent, but sustained by his artist's eye, he recorded what he saw, often sketching on tissues as other materials were scarce.

This reference selects some of Hamada's mature work to highlight as full-page illustrations. Not all images selected are his most known prints and the larger-scale format allows the viewer to become more familiar with this artist and explore each selected design in greater depth. There is a useful pictorial appendix that initiates an attempt at a catalogue raisonné but the images conclude in the early 70s, the time of the book’s publication, thus lacking the later portion of the artist’s body of work. Nonetheless, the quality of this publication certainly merits inclusion even in the most discriminating art libraries.
