Details
The Society of Japanese Arts produced this seminal reference on the Meiji artist Tsukioka Yoshitoshi in collaboration with the University of Washington and the Van Gogh Museum. This book was released for the celebration of the centenary of Yoshitoshi's death and served as the catalogue for the exhibition that was initially held by the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, and subsequently traveled to Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf and on to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
This outstanding reference contains invaluable analysis by the preeminent Yoshitoshi scholar, John Stevenson, who provides a biographical and historical overview and breaches the important but seldomly discussed topic of violence in Japanese art and its prevalence in Yoshitoshi's artistry. This book is lavishly illustrated with images on every page, including 60 large color illustrations. The book's appendix is one of the most useful found in books on this subject.
