Details
This design depicts Murasaki Shikibu, the famed poet of the Heian period that composed one of Japan’s most dear and valuable literary masterpieces, The Tale of Genji. Mori depicts the noblewoman and lady-in-waiting at a table with brush in hand with eyes closed in a moment of contemplation. There is an inkstone and scroll on the table, ready to receive her inspired prose. The room is depicted bathed in the moonlight while the poet’s long black hair travels down her opulent robe.
Connoisseur’s Note
This stunning print was produced in a small edition of fifty impressions and never reprinted. Within this limited run, there are two color states known. This impression was executed in a brown and dark beige coloration for lady Murasaki’s robe. The other version was executed in red-orange.
