In this design, Noel Nouët showcases a charming scene of Akasaka Mitsuke in the rain. The design features budding cherry trees and the growing greens of spring. The heavy spring rain feeds the river below as the people cross the bridge at the center of the composition. It’s interesting to note this idyllic scene is only steps away from a large entertainment district. By the mid-1930s Akasaka Mitsuke boasted cafés, bars, and restaurants with a teeming nightlife. It remains one of Tokyo’s most frequented entertainment districts. 

Connoisseur's Note

This is an exceedingly early impression with a subtler and lighter coloration. Later impressions are executed with darker colors to compensate for the wear on the blocks and bear Doi seals in the margins. This is a rare opportunity to acquire a scarcely available print in its earliest possible state.
