Details
Aptly named, the circular barren marks in the background and in the wood on the foreground beautifully and quite successfully suggest the vapor of raising steam from this beauty's bath. This deluxe printing effect along with the subtle bokashi (color gradation) of blue and gray in the background bring another layer of visual interest to what often in Bijin-ga are solid bands of color. The sense of softness from the steamy vapors is further enhanced by the smooth and supple quality of the figure’s skin and the soft light held around this beauty’s face, particularly notable around her hairline.
Connoisseur's Note
This is one of Kotondo's most successful designs and is in stunning museum-quality condition. All areas of this design are printed with utmost care and technical skill that is unrivaled in Bijin-ga. Of particular note is the flawless black matte of the figure’s hair, adding contrast and holding up the light that seems to emanate from her flawless face. Vapor is part of Kotondo’s stunning larger scale dai oban-sized prints. The oversized format commands attention and heightens the drama that plays out in the design. This impression bears the Maxwell Collector's seal at the left margin. Maxwell was a celebrated collector of Shin Hanga who only collected the top designs in the best possible condition. There is no better pedigree for a bijin-ga.
