Details

The title of this print is inspired by the snowy landscape in the window, serving as a backdrop to this stunning portrait. The white, snow-like light that spills from the window serves to highlight the radiance of this figure. The billowing snow outside is echoed throughout the interior by clever use of circular barren markings in the background, on the walls, and on the windowpane. The woman’s sitting position over the kotatsu heater is anchored by her flawless black matte kimono, which meets the beautifully decorated heater cover articulated in a white star or snowflake-like configuration, further mirroring the accumulation outside.

Connoisseur's Note

This is one of Torii Kotondo's most successful designs and is in stunning museum-quality condition. All areas of this work are printed with utmost care and technical skill that is unrivaled in bijin-ga. Of particular note are the flawless black matte of the figure’s hair and kimono, adding contrast and holding up the light that seems to emanate from her flawless face and arms. Snow is part of Kotondo’s stunning larger-scale dai oban-sized prints. The oversized format commands attention and heightens the drama that plays out in the design.
