Details

In Utagawa Toyonobu's evocative woodblock print from the series "Newly Selected Records of the Taiko Hideyoshi," the viewer is transported into a pivotal moment of Japanese history, depicting the future leader of Japan, Hideyoshi, on a tumultuous journey. As the samurai and daimyo who would eventually unify the country and become its first shogun, Hideyoshi's presence commands respect and admiration. In this striking design, Hideyoshi stands at the bow of the boat, his demeanor unflinching despite the raging seas and crashing waves surrounding him. A samurai bows before him in a gesture of reverence, fidelity, and awe at Hideyoshi's bravery and leadership. Lost in contemplation, Hideyoshi's gaze is lowered, his wild hair echoing the turmoil of the sea below. Toyonobu masterfully captures the tension and significance of this moment, offering viewers a glimpse into the character and determination of one of Japan's most influential figures.
