Details
One outstanding example of Toshi Yoshida's exploration of foreign subjects is the design of Bruges. This masterful composition unveils a captivating scene, elegantly simplified to portray a weeping willow gracefully extending its branches downward, delicately touching the tranquil water among the gathered white ducks. The design skillfully captures one of Bruges' picturesque canals, offering a serene glimpse into the charm of the Belgian city. What sets this print apart is its evocative subject matter and the technical mastery on display. Striking colors, expertly executed bokashi (color gradation), and meticulous embossing throughout the composition contribute to a heightened tactile experience, showcasing Toshi Yoshida's proficiency and finesse in woodblock printing.
Connoisseur's Note
This impression is a previously uncirculated work from the Yoshida Family. The print is in pristine condition, with exceptional colors and a razor-sharp impression. The composition boasts blind printing (embossing) throughout the design.
The print is a rare lifetime impression with a live pencil signature. Later, posthumous impressions have stamped signatures and a series of Japanese characters on the reverse identifying the new publisher.
