Details
In this striking Sosaku Hanga print by Toru Mabuchi, the artist's early stylistic choices are on full display, offering a glimpse into the evolution of his work. Renowned for his mosaic-like still life compositions, this early piece showcases Mabuchi's experimentation before solidifying his mature style. The brightly colored scene depicts a suburban street in Tokyo, with the towering presence of Mount Fuji dominating the composition's center top portion. While Fuji's majestic peak is visible, the rest of the mountain is shrouded in a veil of cloud cover, adding an element of mystery to the scene. Below, the city street is rendered in soft, wide swaths of color, conveying a sense of tranquility and serenity. The uneven incline of the street creates a dynamic sense of movement, leading the viewer's eye toward the direction of the mountain. A telephone pole at the right side further guides the viewer's gaze, drawing attention back to the majestic presence of Fuji. Through Mabuchi's masterful use of color and composition, this early work captures the essence of suburban life in Tokyo while highlighting the timeless allure of Japan's iconic natural landscapes.
Connoisseur's Note
This impression is an exceedingly rare early work by Mabuchi. It was produced before Mabuchi was a professional print maker. It is unnumbered and was most likely produced in a handful of impressions. The print is in excellent condition.
