Details

This striking abstract design is by the celebrated Sosaku Hanga artist Takumi Shinagawa. The artist first produced work when in Onchi’s circle, during and after WWII. Influenced by Onchi, Shinagawa embraced experimentation, developing highly imaginative works exemplified by this remarkable composition.

Similar to Onchi's later work from the 1950s, this purely abstract design incorporates elements unconventional to woodblock printmaking, including fragments of fabric with diverse textures. The overlay of colors and textures echoes Onchi's own explorations in this realm.

Despite the evident dialogue with his mentor, Shinagawa infuses this composition with his distinctive creative flair for movement. As an artist interested in mobiles and motion, this piece unmistakably reflects Shinagawa's fascination with gestures and dynamic motion, establishing it as a unique expression of his artistic vision.

Connoisseur's Note

Created prior to 1960, this print represents one of the artist's early endeavors, a fact evident in the use of an all-cap signature, a style later replaced by a cursive script after 1959. The print exudes a vibrant quality reminiscent of Onchi's highly coveted work, characterized by a wet and spontaneous printing style.
