Details
Ito Shinsui is synonymous with bijin-ga, or images of beautiful women. He is also known for exceptional landscapes produced throughout his career, and this design is a particularly noteworthy example.
This oversized print illustrates the splendor and radiance of Mt. Fuji as the sun’s rays descend toward this extraordinary vista. The design is presented, much like Shinsui’s bijin-ga, with a straightforward view of the subject. Shinsui’s use of light and color is astonishing. Most noteworthy is the sensitive application of bokashi, or color gradation, which effectively illustrates the light falling from the mountain’s peak as the growing shadows of evening trail down its slope.
Connoisseur's Note
This first state impression is in exceedingly fine shape. The print’s colors are sharp and vivid, as they appeared when the print was first produced.
