Details

A Maiko is a geisha in training whose youth is typically highlighted by their particular hair and clothing style. Ito Shinsui has showcased this archetype well in this charming design. The young Maiko’s hair is pinned up with a comb and floral embellishments that advance a youthful exuberance. Her kimono is a riot of color and pattern, which further establishes youthful vigor. As a work of art, the design also highlights the keen skill of Watanabe’s workshop, as the print displays almost every artistic ability in the woodblock carver and printer’s skillset. Of note is the diversity of textures that are presented to the viewer. From the Maiko’s well-coiffed black hair, soft porcelain-like skin tone to the various textures found throughout the woman’s assemble, not to mention the beautiful barren work in the design’s background.

Connoisseur's Note

This print bears the Watanabe “C” type seal at the lower right margin, indicative of the first state printing of this design. This work is in an exceptional state of preservation, as it has never been framed or displayed for extended periods. The colors are pristine, and the impression is exceptional.
