Details
In this design, Hiroshi Yoshida recounts the stately entrance to the well-appointed Fuji New Grand Hotel on the banks of Lake Yamanaka. This ideal location for a hotel is easily surveyed by the landscape the artist lays out, as the hotel is literally in the footsteps of the majestic snowcapped Mt. Fuji. This impressive composition is bolstered by the artist’s signature style that is highly realistic with stylized components that recall his watercolor work. The over composition has a stunning atmospheric quality that showcases Fuji in clear weather that successfully invokes the crisp freshness of a spring day.
Connoisseur's Note
This work was commissioned by the original owners of the hotel. As such, this design was never issued with the artist’s Jizuri seal and was never reprinted posthumously. This impression bears the artist's Japanese brush signature as well as a western-style signature in a blue ball-point pen at the lower right margin, as with every impression of this design. Due to its commission in a limited production, this work is among the artist's rarest oban-sized designs.
