Details

Although primarily known for his kacho-e (bird and flower designs), Shoson did produce several landscape designs. This work is among his most celebrated landscapes and has taken its place as an icon of Shin Hanga. The design features two women clad in traditional dress, walking over a bridge during a snowfall. The women's faces are obscured by their snow-covered umbrellas, while the willow tree overhead trails down with its snowy branches to greet the travelers.

Connoisseur's Note

This outstanding print happens to be an early post-war impression of the design, bearing the round 6mm Watanabe seal at the lower left. The colors of this impression are sharp and vivid and display no color loss whatsoever.
