Details

Ohara Koson is renowned for his evocative depictions of crows, and his designs featuring these daring and highly intelligent birds have always been in great demand. This particular design was so popular that the publisher issued it in two versions: one with a gray background (offered here) and another with an orange-red background, as is the case with this impression. This work, with its pronounced woodgrain background, creates a strong atmospheric effect. The contrast between the vibrant orange backdrop and the dark crow enhances the bird’s presence and animates the scene. One can almost hear the cawing crow in the cold, crisp winter air.

Connoisseur's Note

This impression is especially noteworthy for its visible woodgrain in the background, which adds a unique texture and depth to the scene. The dramatic bokashi, or color gradation, of the red-orange pigment bleeds out to a lighter shade, creating a mesmerizing effect. The crow is masterfully executed with an overprinting of shiny lacquer-like pigment, adding volume to its feathers and heightening the tension of the scene. The interplay of light and dark, combined with the exquisite details, makes this print highly desirable for collectors.
