It is said: eventually, every artist working in Japan, particularly printmakers, must take up the challenge of capturing Mt. Fuji. In this print, Maeda takes up the call by showcasing the iconic silhouette of Fuji set against a backdrop of a growing night. Maeda bathes Fuji in rich browns and red oxide that grow stronger as the eye moves up towards the summit. The background is treated with olive, yellow, and red. Again, Maeda uses a skillful application of color gradation to create a stunning transitional effect where the colors grow stronger as the eye moves up the composition. Though deceitfully simple at first glance, this stunning composition is a study of texture and light that harmonizes emotional expression with form.
