Details

In a bit of a departure from his landscapes, Yoshida produced three kuchi-e (bird and flower) designs early in his prolific career. The designs featured full-length portraits of three Cockatoo parrots, an exotic species not native to Japan. In this design, Yoshida presents a rather surprisingly realistic image. The parrot is rendered in almost lifelike size in exquisite detail. The bird's feathers have been meticulously reproduced with fine lines, subtle coloration, and blind printing (concave embossing), resulting in an exact and intimate composition that draws the viewer into the design. The majestic bird is set against the backdrop of outstanding barren work. Circular lines created in the printing process give the composition depth and texture, providing a suitable contrast to the parrot's supple feathers.

Connoisseur's Note

This design and its two counterparts are among the artist's rarest works. This impression is an excellent example of the design. Exhibiting fresh, untouched colors, the print looks like it could have been created today. This print features Yoshida's jizuri seal and a brush and pencil signature, indicating it was produced under his strict supervision.
