Details
Kawase Hasui left an indelible mark on the art world with his nearly 600 woodblock print designs made throughout his career. Notably, more than a hundred designs from his body of work took the form of postcard-size prints commissioned by the publisher S. Watanabe. These endearing miniature artworks were derived from adaptations of his larger prints and original designs tailored for this more compact format. Despite their diminutive format, Hasui's postcard prints exemplify the same meticulous craftsmanship in woodblock carving and printing found in his larger masterpieces. Their scarcity in the art market suggests limited print runs, rendering them some of the artist's most elusive creations.
Connoisseur's Note
This outstanding collection, comprising almost one hundred prints, presents a comprehensive array of Hasui's artistic repertoire in the postcard format. Many designs in this collection are exceedingly rare, and this exhibition may mark the first time a number of these designs are available online.
