Details

In this design, Sekino presents a voluptuous reclining nude asleep on a divan. The nude is shown from an unorthodox perspective, with her body slightly contoured, which accentuates her posterior. The composition is lit by a trailing light at the left. Beyond the figure, the daybed’s surface and the white cloth that is partially under the figure are rendered in an expressive printing style, much in the style of Sekino’s teacher of the period, Koshiro Onchi. It is interesting to consider this work to Onchi’s “Nude on White Cloth, 1929,” as Sekino’s work is more decorative and concerned with the overall effect of the composition, while Onchi’s print is chiefly focused on his figure. The white cloth in Sekino’s work may be a subtle reference to Onchi’s work.

Connoisseur's Note

This work is a rare self-printed example. Although known in a handful of impressions, it is unlikely that Sekino finalized this edition. The scarcity of this impression is further bolstered by the highly expressive printing style that showcases the direct influence of Koshiro Onchi, the artist’s teacher at the time of production.
