Details

In Fumio Kitaoka's mesmerizing print of Manhattan, New York, viewers are treated to a breathtaking aerial perspective of the iconic skyline. Dominating the scene is the majestic Woolworth Building, a symbol of the city's architectural prowess and historical significance. Its Gothic-inspired design, with intricate detailing and soaring spires, stands as a testament to the city's grandeur. Surrounding the Woolworth Building are a symphony of skyscrapers, each vying for attention with their unique silhouettes and shimmering facades. Kitaoka's masterful use of gold, blue, and black hues creates a mesmerizing interplay of light and shadow, capturing the dynamic energy of the bustling metropolis. Against a backdrop of deep blue, the white of the paper subtly suggests the expansive body of water surrounding the Statue of Liberty, which looms faintly in the distance, a timeless symbol of freedom and aspiration. This scene, perhaps inspired by H. Yoshida's 1929 composition of the same subject from a similar vantage point, pays homage to the enduring allure of New York City while capturing its restless spirit and relentless ambition.

Connoisseur's Note

This print is an exceedingly rare impression executed after the artist’s visit to the US in the late 1960s. This design is among a handful of US landscapes showcasing major cities. The print is in exceptional state of preservation with sharp and vivid colors.
