Details
This design harkens back to the Kabuki designs of Ukiyo-e. The work illustrates the Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjuro—the mon, or family crest, at the end of the actor’s robe easily identifies the actor. The design is full of vitality and drama. The actor and his well-appointed robes make up all of the design. The stance, though caught in a moment of stillness, actually suggests forward movement. Not often seen on Mori prints, the artist added hand-brushed pigments most noticeable on the actor’s face, under the raised arm, sword hilt, and on the actor’s garment, emphasizing the sense of movement and the overall dynamic quality of the composition.
Connoisseur's Note
This design is one of Mori’s most successful large-scale stencil prints. It’s considered one of his masterpieces and among his most sought-after figurative works. This particular impression is made even more desirable by its sharp and vivid colors.
