Tanaka is known for his spellbinding, intricate landscapes that usher the viewer into a world of nature and magic. The minute detail the artist can achieve within his designs is astonishing. He conjures an entire cosmos within the confines of a sheet of paper. In this night design, the artist provides us with an examination of a mandarin tree filled with oranges. The color of the fruit is striking in that it seems to emanate its own light, almost moon-like. The moon, fixed overhead, seems to echo the motionless fruit. The juxtaposition of both round forms, fruit, and moon, is strangely fascinating and seems to offer a bit of humor. The poetics of this night scene is filled with mystery, and yet the viewer can't help but smile.
Connoisseur's Note
Tanaka passed away in October of 2019. He was a prolific artist, and his striking designs have continued to grow in popularity. Based on their beauty and labor-intensive quality, there is little doubt their desirability will continue to grow.
