Details
Known as the artist of trees, Joichi Hoshi creates a world all his own, bringing a profound sense of contemplation and poetics to these subjects. Red Tree (large) was created at the height of Hoshi's career and contains all elements that enshrined him as an icon of contemporary Japanese prints. Rendered in intricate detail, Hoshi poses a tree, clad in the color of desire, against a brilliant gold leaf background. The beautifully articulated tree limbs are ornate and robust, creating the sense of a remote overgrown forest deep in the recesses of the viewer’s imagination.
Connoisseur's Note
The background is printed in gold leaf which creates depth and provides a mysterious source of light that is held deep within the design. This work is one of the artist’s most successful design and as a result is among his most sought after works.
