Details
Known as the artist of stars and trees, Joichi Hoshi creates a world all his own, bringing a profound sense of contemplation and poetics to these subjects. Night Scene (Red) was created at the height of Hoshi's career and contains all elements that enshrined him as an icon of contemporary Japanese prints. Rendered in intricate detail, Hoshi poses a tree, clad in the color of desire, against a starlit sky. The unified tree limbs seem to cradle the stars and the light they keep. There is a profound sense of longing—starlight desiring to descend and tree limbs yearning to ascend. This design is one of Hoshi's most beautiful works and the artist was so enamored by the design that he explored it further, producing another version executed in blue.
Connoisseur's Note
Printed with gold and bronze mica highlights--the bronze background is overprinted on gold leaf and a fine layer of gold color mica has been applied over the bronze background. The complexity of this overprinting creates depth and provides a mysterious source of light that is held deep within the design.
