Details

Persimmons is a stunning large-scale work executed in the artist's signature style with sharp, contrasting colors. The scene depicts twilight with its myriads of blues populating the composition. Clifton Karhu highlights his late autumnal composition with bright orange and browns and touches of green. This spectacular view the artist lays out is a suitable backdrop to highlight the brightness and deepening tones of the ripening persimmons. The round format of the composition traditionally has been understood as a fan shape design popularized by Edo period landscape artists such as Hiroshige. In Karhu's hand, the circular format becomes a magical window—a portal—to a moment of pristine beauty and contemplation, where color is elevated beyond a mere element in a landscape to that of the main character.

Connoisseur's Note

This impression is in an exceedingly fine state of preservation. The print's colors are as fresh and vivid as the day the work was executed. It's quite rare to find oversized prints, such as this one, in excellent condition, as the vast majority of these prints suffered from poor framing practices and light exposure.
