This charming Parisian design takes full advantage of the texture collagraph printing provides, creating depth and a wonderful atmospheric quality. The scene is delightfully gothic and brings to mind the charmingly dark work of Edward Gorey. Of Saito's Parisian collagraph prints, this work has been featured in several publications, including the cover of the Hakudotei Gallery exhibition catalogue, well known for its extensive illustration of this portion of Saito's oeuvre.
Connoisseur's Note
Saito learned the art of collagraph printmaking while on a trip to the US in the early 1960s. Collographs utilize cardboard printing blocks and as such can only accommodate a limited number of impressions, typically 20 at most.
