Details
Nakagawa presents a school of tropical fish meandering past the viewer in this design. Each fish is rendered with a distinct face and personality (a quality the artist was known to imbue into his print designs). The colors of the fish are deep and vibrant. A hint of light appears to trail down the composition, originating at the far top right, whereas the fish's attention is drawn toward the darker portion of the composition into the ocean's depths.
Connoisseur's Note
This impression is an early self-printed example from the late 1930s or early 1940s. This early example showcases a deeper coloration with no margins, trimmed by the artist to the edge of the composition. Later examples printed in the 50s and 60s bear lighter and flatter colorations with large white margins. Later examples also bear the artist's signature in pencil.
