Details
In this stunning design, Koitsu clearly illustrates why he is most remembered for his use of light. The design showcases the steps leading to the Yomei Gate in Nikko. The scene is colorful, but the color is punctuated by Koitsu’s keen use of light, as it dabbles across every aspect of the composition, strengthening the various shapes and colors it touches. Areas of this design appear almost photographic as Koitsu’s use of light highlights the light green leaves overhead, the trailing light across the steps illuminating the Shinto priest robes which lead the eye to the Yomei gate at the center of this thrilling composition.
Connoisseur's Note
Although Koitsu mostly worked with Watanabe, this rarely seen design was published by Baba Nobuhiko in 1939. This work is in an exceptional state of preservation, as it has never been framed or displayed for extended periods. The colors are pristine, and the impression is exceptional.
