Details
Though this view of Mt. Fuji is certainly impressive, this suite of two prints is more a study of light and texture than of this sacred mountain. These two separate impressions were produced using the same basic woodblock matrix that composes the design. Additional blocks were carved and printed to add the variety of differing texture, light, color, and the rain pattern found on one of the designs. These oversized double oban prints are well-suited for this type of study, as the viewer is immediately drawn in to seek out differences within each work and the larger format easily showcases these divergent nuances. Of course, each of these designs is a stunning standalone work. The design with the rain differentiates itself for its astonishing realistic atmospheric quality. Takahashi Hiroaki has drafted a commanding view of Mt. Fuji, but it was his successful experimentation of light, texture, and seasonal attribution that impress this image upon our hearts.
Connoisseur's Note
The publisher originally sold these designs both individually and in pairs. On the rare occasion they are now encountered in the marketplace, one normally sees these prints offered individually. This is a rare opportunity to own a pair of oversized Hiroaki masterworks that directly demonstrate the astonishing capabilities we have all come to love about woodblock prints.
